ECC 2027: what CIOs need to decide now

Mainstream maintenance for SAP ECC ends on 31 December 2027. Which decisions are due now and why time is shorter than it seems.

Mustafa Yıldırım ·

Mainstream maintenance for SAP ECC 6.0 ends on 31 December 2027. After that, only paid extended maintenance remains until 2030 — or operating without regular support.

Why time is shorter than it seems

An S/4HANA programme in a large group rarely takes less than 12 to 18 months. Add decision-making, tendering and preparation, and the path decision for a go-live by the end of 2027 has to be made during 2026 at the latest.

On top of that, experienced consultants and integrator capacity become scarcer the closer the deadline gets.

Three decisions that are due now

  1. Path: brownfield, greenfield or selective data transition.
  2. Operating model: on-premise, private cloud or RISE with SAP.
  3. Transition strategy: is extended maintenance planned as a buffer — and budgeted?

What you can do concretely

A five-day readiness check creates the factual basis for all three decisions. It shows how much custom code is actually used, what state your data is in and which path fits your timeframe.
