Brownfield, greenfield or selective? A decision guide
Three migration paths to S/4HANA compared: when each approach fits and which questions should be answered before deciding.

Choosing the migration path is the most consequential decision of an S/4HANA transformation. It determines effort, risk and value for the next ten years.
Brownfield: convert rather than rebuild
The existing system is technically converted to S/4HANA. History and configuration are retained. Fast and low-risk — but legacy baggage comes along too.
Greenfield: start afresh
Re-implementation with standard processes. The opportunity to simplify is greatest — and so is the change effort.
Selective data transition: the best of both?
A new system into which data and structures are migrated selectively. Flexible, but dependent on specialised tools and partners.
Five questions before you decide
- How much of your custom code is actually used?
- How great is the need for process redesign?
- How important is the full history in the system?
- How much change can your organisation absorb alongside daily business?
- How much time remains until the end of maintenance?
